The Cambodian government has asked telecommunications firms to bury fibre-optic cables underground, the Phnom Penh Post writes. The cables are currently strung above the streets in Phnom Penh but the telecommunications ministry is working with other ministries to get the cables in the ground in the capital ahead of Cambodia's chairmanship of the ASEAN.

Telecommunications minister So Khun says the move need not be costly as there are already ducts for cables across the city. Including TV connections, at least 1,000 kilometres of fibre-optic cables hang in Phnom Penh, Steven Cao, CEO of Cambodia Fiber Optics Communication Network estimates.

I just wonder why they are going to bury these fiber optic cables?
