Floods and landslides kill 50 people in China - Xinhua

Torrential rain and floods hit drought-stricken central China on Thursday night, killing 50 people and leaving 40 more missing, according to China's state media.

In Hubei province Many homes and river embankments were destroyed by floods and landslides triggered by the torrential rain that has killed 25 people and left more than 12 others missing as of Friday evening, according to the province's civil affairs departmen.

The department said more than 127,500 people so far were forced to evacuate their homes and the floods. Most of the deaths were reported in the city of Xianning where more than 100 people were injured. It has caused direct economic losses of 866 million yuan.

Xinhua said in Hunan Province, during the early Friday, rain-triggered landslides has killed 19 people and left another 28 missing in the cities of Linxiang and Yueyang.

In Jiangxi Province, rain-triggered floods also wreaked havoc. About 1,200 people were rescued and about 29,500 people have been evacuated.

Meanwhile the new round of torrential rain killed three more people in Guizhou Province. Over 50 people were killed or missing in floods earlier this week, according to Xinhua.

The four provinces had been hit by a severe drought in recent months which affected millions of hectares of farmland, said Xinhua.

The China Meteorological Administration said tropical storm Sarika is expected to hit south Guangdong and Fujian provinces over the weekend.
