7 Apr, 2011

Cambodian former King Norodom Sihanouk and his wife Norodom Monineath Sihanouk arrived home on Wednesday afternoon after spending nine months in Beijing for routine medical checkup.

At the Phnom Penh International Airport, the couple were welcomed by Senate President Chea Sim, National Assembly President Heng Samrin, Prime Minister Hun Sen, other government officials, royal family members and Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Pan Guangxue.

The couple went to Beijing last July for routine medical checkup and rest.

Their return was made just a week ahead of Khmer New Year, which comes on April 14-16.

Prince Sisowath Chivan Monirak, first vice president of the Senate, said at the airport that the couple returned home as they promised to celebrate the Khmer New Year with the people. " Moreover, his health is stable, that's why Chinese doctors allowed him to return," he added.

The former King Norodom Sihanouk, 89, has suffered from various forms of cancer since 1993.
