Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner in the United Kingdom, Nihal Jayasinghe will bid goodbye this week after completing his tenure in London. Although he has been offered the slot as Chairman of the Bribery Commission, the Sunday Island learns that he would not accept the job as he is keen to take up a top position in Cambodia. At present he is one of the judges presiding over the war crimes tribunal in Cambodia. There is no official world on who would succeed Jayasinghe in London though former Navy Commander Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda was earlier tipped to take over this key European station. But, reports now indicate that he is expected to be posted to Tokyo.

Amongst the names doing the rounds in the grapevine as a possible successor are former Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama and Election Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake. Deputy High Commissioner P. M. Amza has been named acting High Commissioner until a permanent appointment is made, sources said.

The Sunday Island learns that the British government has expressed reservations about providing security to Admiral Karannagoda in case he is appointed Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to London.
