Hanoi - A Vietnamese court has sentenced two Filipinos involved in a heroin smuggling ring to prison, a court official said Friday.

Ringleader John Lopez Diemsen, 48, a former senior officer in the Philippine police, was sentenced to life in prison, said Nguyen Hoa Hieu, chief judge of the Tay Ninh Province People's Court.

His accomplice Raquel Malayao Ramos, 32, received 20 years.

The verdict said four other Filipinos involved in the ring have also been arrested, but have not yet been indicted. Police were conducting further investigations.

Diemsen was arrested in Vietnam in August 2009 while receiving 847.2 grams of heroin from Ramos.

The verdict stated that Diemsen, Ramos, and another Filipino, Bernard Ree Garcia, planned to transport the heroin from Cambodia via Vietnam to the Philippines for sale.

Diemsen sent Ramos to Cambodia to receive heroin from a supplier, who allegedly paid Ramos 3,000 dollars to carry each shipment across the border to Vietnam.
