Vietnam calls for a concerted effort to conserve tigers

20 Oct, 2010

Education of Nature - Vietnam (ENV) has launched a website on tigers at http://www.thiennhien.org/BVH to protect the few remaining tigers in the world.

According to the ENV, the most important thing when conserving tigers is to protect their natural habitat as well as step up enforcement of the law to prevent tiger and tiger products trading.

It is also necessary to raise public awareness and to encourage them to join hands to protect this endangered species and lower the demand for tiger products.

Statistics show that in Vietnam, there are just roughly 30 tigers scattered across national parks and reserves, mainly in the central region and forests along the borders with Laos and Cambodia.

Over the past 15 years, the global tiger population has decreased rapidly due to illegal hunting and the demand for their bones or skins as medicines.

The International Tiger Coalition estimates that less than 3,500 wild tigers are left in the world.
