HA NOI — Viet Nam and Cambodia are drawing closer together in the fight against drug smuggling.

National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong said this at a reception for Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Ke Kim Yan here yesterday. Yan is also the chairman of the Cambodian Authority for Combating Drugs.

"Relations between the two nations have been strengthened, not only in trade and investment, but also in combating drug smuggling and related crimes," Trong said.

He said Viet Nam had introduced many measures to combat trafficking, including raising people's awareness about the negative effects of drugs.

He added that prevention was a long-term issue that involved close co-operation with neighbouring countries.

Yan thanked the Viet Nam Government for supporting Cambodia in fighting drug trafficking and drug-related crimes.

Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the National Committee for AIDS, Drug and Prostitution Control Truong Vinh Trong spoke to Yan at a separate meeting.

Trong said co-ordination between Viet Nam, Laos and Cambodia had helped minimise drug trafficking across borders.

He said Viet Nam had achieved good results in implementing a pilot methadone programme in HCM City and northern Hai Phong port city.
