Myanmar accused of nuclear weapon aspirations

A defector from Myanmar's military says that while he was a General in the army he saw first-hand that Myanmar was developing infastructure for the building of nuclear weapons.

Myanmar has denied media reports that it is pursuing a nuclear weapons program and called the reports by foreign media “politically motivated” in a statement issued by the foreign ministry.

Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is a Southeast Asian country under the control of a military dictatorship that has, for over a decade, kept the democratically elected Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest.

When a defector, Major Sai Thein Win, featured in a documentary by Norway based broadcaster Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB) he alleged that he’d been part of an engineering unit charged with developing a nuclear reactor and assembling a rocket engine.

In recent months international analysts have warned that Myanmar may be getting help from North Korea in their nuclear weapons development program.

The military junta in Myanmar has stridently denied such accusations calling them “baseless” and insisting that they were a peace-loving country.

Myanmar is a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency and has signed the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty. If it is found to be developing nuclear weapons it will be subject to UN sanctions.
