A Thai veterinary team has announced the nation's first successful birth of an Eld's Deer conceived by artificial insemination.

A team of four Thai veterinary experts confirmed they were able to conduct an artificial insemination of an Eld's Deer for the very first time in the world, on March 30th.

The sperm used in the project was collected from a Burmese Eld's Deer in Phetchaburi province in 2008, and the teams insist the test is the world' first vitro-fertilisation.

Four Eld's Deer hinds, from Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chon Buri province, were inseminated with the sperm. Only one became pregnant.

A Zoological Park Organisation of Thailand's research centre staff, Boripat Siriaroonrat, said the accomplishment could mean the organisation can also work with Siamese Eld's Deer.

However, he revealed that wild Siamese Eld's Deer are currently found only in Cambodia.

Other team members are Sitthawee Thongthipsiridej, Amphika Thongphakdee, and Malee Aphimethithamrong.

They added that the insemination project sought cooperation from Deer experts from New Zealand and the United States.
