City to tackle homelessness

16-01-2010

HCM CITY — HCM City hopes to solve homelessness issue for the city’s permanent residents by providing shelters, education and vocational training, said deputy director of the city’s Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, Nguyen Thi Tuyet Nhung.

For the homeless who had migrated from other provinces, and accounted for 70 per cent of the total, the department would coordinate with relevant departments and agencies in their home provinces to repatriate them from HCM City streets, Nhung said at a conference held on Thursday.

The department would assist the city’s People’s Committee to improve coordination between the city and other provinces and cities to cope with the issue, she said.

According to a year-end report, the city Social Sponsor Centre last year received a total of nearly 3,500 homeless people, including 302 teenagers, 602 elderly and disabled and 751 Cambodians.

As many as 144 homeless were sent back to their provinces and cities and 783 people deported to Cambodia. — VNS
