Citing an informed source in the Cambodian government, Kyodo news agency reported on Tuesday that fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra had this morning arrived in Phnom Penh.

The Japanese news agency said Thaksin flew in his personal jet from India to Cambodia. He is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Hun Sen and to brief 300 Cambodian economists on Thursday.

Last Wednesday, Thaksin was appointed economic adviser to the Cambodian government and a personal adviser to Mr Hun Sen by King Norodom Sihamoni.

The Thai government has repeatedly stated that it would seek Thaksin's extradition of Thaksin if he stays in the neighbouring country.
