'Jungle Woman' of Cambodia hospitalized, mentally ill

01/11/2009

The woman dubbed the "jungle woman" after emerging from the jungles of northeastern Cambodia two years ago, is sick and apparently suffering from a nervous disorder, a doctor said Friday.
The woman, believed to be Rochom P'ngieng, was brought from the jungle in early 2007. She was caught trying to steal food from a villager.

She was naked and walked like an animal. She was able to speak, but was not found to be able to speak any intelligible language.

A local family claimed she was their daughter who had disappeared in 1988, at the age of eight, while herding buffalo. They identified her by a scar on her arm.

A local family claimed she was their daughter who had disappeared in 1988, at the age of eight, while herding buffalo. They identified her by a scar on her arm.

Though she lives with the family, the relationship was never proven. Some villagers suspect she is actually a woman who had been lost in the jungle for a shorter length of time. Others think she was a religious refugee from Vietnam's Central Highlands.

After refusing to eat rice for a month, the woman was hospitalized Monday. She was weak and distressed.

After four days, she did not improve and kept trying to run away, so she was taken back home by the man who claims to be her father.

Her doctor wanted her to remain at the hospital so the staff could better assess her mental state. A preliminary diagnosis revealed she suffers from a nervous condition.

She was removed from the hospital by her father without informing the doctors.
