16/10/2009

HANOI -(Dow Jones)- Vietnam's military-run telecommunications company Viettel and its Laotian partner Lao Asia Telecom will launch a mobile phone network in Laos Friday, state media said.

The network, called Unittel, is run by a joint venture between the two companies, in which the Vietnamese partner holds a 49% stake and the Laotian partner has 51%, online news provider ICTNews reported.

The network now has nearly 900 base transmission stations, the report said. It targets to have a 25% market share in Laos by 2025, the report said, citing Lao Asia Telecom Director Oulaha Thongvatha.

It said this will be Viettel's second mobile phone network overseas, after its Metfone network in Cambodia.
