Railways complete feasibility study for new southern route

15-09-2009

HCM CITY — A feasibility study for a rail link between HCM City and Loc Ninh in the southern province of Binh Phuoc has been completed, the Viet Nam Railway Administration said.

The line will run from Di An on the North-South Railroad through the towns of Thu Dau Mot in Binh Duong Province and Chon Thanh and Loc Ninh in Binh Phuoc before terminating at Hoa Lu on the border with Cambodia.
The 128.5km line will have 12 stations and its construction will cost US$438 million.
According to the contractor, a consortium comprising China National Machinery Import&Export Corp. and China Railway Construction Corporation, the track will be one metre wide and can be linked with existing tracks.

The work will be funded partly by official development assistance from China and other donors.
Construction is scheduled to begin next year and take 42 months, including 12 months to acquire land.

The Railway Administration also announced the completion of a feasibility study for another route linking Vung Ang in Ha Tinh Province with Mu Gia in Quang Binh Province, both in central region.

The 119-km long line, terminating at the Cha Lo Border Gate, will have 12 stations, seven tunnels, and 24 bridges.

Nguyen Van Doanh, deputy head of the railway, said the projects, envisaged in a master plan for developing the railway network through 2020, would help expand business co-operation with Laos and Cambodia.

They will also be a part of the Trans-Asia Railway linking Singapore with Kunming, China, according to the Ministry of Transport.

Viet Nam became the ninth country to join the Trans-Asia Railway after Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung approved it on August 11.

Russia, India, Mongolia, Tajikistan, South Korea, Thailand, Cambodia and China have ratified the agreement for the 114,000km route that will link 28 Asian and European countries. — VNS
